Angam art which has a history over periods of twenty five thousand years, is one of the arts from among the many fine arts developed by the Sinhalese. In other words, it is an impressive martial art endemic to the Sinhalese. There is evidence to show that this art was popular. The history of this has a long heritage dating back to king Mahasen of Katharagama. King Ravana has added diverse features to this art and completed it. Though this art is a form of attack, it is not only a martial art.

Not only ancient forms of Sinhalese meditation, Sinhalese Yoga meditation, indigenous medicines and Nerve point techniques (Nila) endemic to the Sinhalese are included in this art, but also the handling of weapons, leaps (Pinum) and summersaults (Karanam) and forms of attack are inclusive and is an ancient complete form of knowledge in this world.
